Dieter Rams is one of the most influential figures when it comes to minimalist design. Rams was born in 1932 and is best known for the work he has done for the electronics manufacturer Braun. The German industrial designer first joined the company in 1955 and became its chief designer in 1961, staying in the position to 1995. In 1959, he also joined the forces with furniture manufacturer Vitsœ where he still contributes. During his career, Rams has been involved with the design process of several hundred products.
As becoming frustrated with the disorder of the world around him, Rams introduced Ten Principles of Good Design in the late 1970s. It can be argued they are practically synonymous with the qualities great minimalist products possess. The principles state the following:

Less but better focuses on informing the reader of Rams´ ethos and philosophy behind his designs, whereas The Complete Works presents every Rams product (by the time of publication) in a chronological order and includes over 300 color illustrations.
